Giveaway: Copies of Gossip’s New CD “A Joyful Noise”

It’s been a while since we’ve done a giveaway and I’m particularly excited about this one because I hope it will help introduce people to Gossip, the self-proclaimed “genre-bending DIY post-punk rock trio” with a feminist consciousness. Gossip is comprised of three “outspoken queers”: vocalist Beth Ditto, guitarist Nathan Howdeshell, and drummer Hannah Blilie.

To be honest, I had heard of and admired Ditto from interviews where she talks about her feminism but I wasn’t super familiar with Gossip’s music. Turns out her singing and performance with Gossip only makes me more impressed. Then I watched the video for their new single, “A Perfect World”, and knew I had to find out more.

In an interview with Shameless in 20006, Ditto and Blilie talked about their experiences as feminists and women musicians. They both said they experienced challenges. According to Blilie:

“Before you even walk up on stage there are so many things that are working against you, it’s totally loaded. You really have to break through a lot of walls in the music industry and you have to be prepared for it: the sexist sound-check guys, the people who say “You’re pretty good musicians for girls,” and those who say “I never liked girl musicians until I saw you.”

Both Ditto and Blilie say they feel like the pressure they experienced helps makes their music as ferocious and powerful as it is. Luckily for us, Gossip is fighting, and winning.

Their first major full-length albums which came out in 2009, ironically titled “Music for Men”, is quirky, rhythmic, intelligent, political, and powerful. Their new album, “A Joyful Noise” is already creating big buzz. And 3 lucky Canadian Gender Focus readers will have the chance to win a copy of the new CD!

  1. Comment on this blog post and tell me your favourite summer road trip song by any band (make sure to leave your email so I can contact you if you win).
  2. Post the following to Twitter: I entered to win @GossipMusic’s new CD “A Joyful Noise” from @jarrahpenguin and gender-focus.com

(disclosure as per blog policy: the prize CDs were offered to me for this blog giveaway but I did not receive any other incentives for writing this review and would not have agreed to the giveaway if I didn’t think the music was awesome and the band would be interesting to Gender Focus readers)
