    My favourite part of the holiday season is – though I don’t personally celebrate the seemingly only holiday that is generally accepted as “the main/gov’t recognized holiday” – the certain, special quiet between “pre” shopping frenzy and the next “post” shopping frenzy…
    A time when the lucky people are often sitting down with family and friends over dinner and gifts.
    There is an amazing calmness to the city; for just a few hours, even, things seem so peaceful.
    It might not be true; there are certainly far too many of us who live with less, of a variety of things… But just for a while, I enjoy the calm and break from the rush of daily life.
    That precious time is my favourite thing in winter. And yes, if some snow has fallen, it seems to compound that feeling of stillness.

    Will you still be my friend if I admit I like the booze? Homemade Bailey’s (vegan or regular) in coffee makes me happy…

      Katie: I think a little well-placed and -paced booze will nicely enhance my holiday stillness, yet also possibly add moments of giggliness or happiness… oh, no!! :)
      {I’ll whip up, or pick up, some vegan Noel Nog, too – complete with Captain Morgan’s Spiced in your honour – for everyone to try! ;) }

  • My favorite part of the winter/holiday season is that people start to genuinely give a shit about each other. Even people they do not know. It warms my heart a little bit.

    My favorite part of the holiday season? Being able to do it MY WAY: an 8′ tall hot pink tree, decorated with pink ornaments from the 50s & 60s that I’ve found at the Goodwill over the years, punk rock & soul holiday tunes on the stereo, trays full of cookies shaped like everything from dreidels and Christmas trees to conjoined gingerbread men and Pride flags, and, most importantly, spending time with both my bio and chosen family!

    Family! And cookies…and a little Bailey’s in coffee doesn’t hurt!

    First, family – all of them – birth families and chosen ones, as a previous poster wrote. Slowing down, spending time, talking, playing with kids.
    And second, lights. I love how each tradition incorporates lights in their mid-winter, solstice-timed celebrations. It reminds me that we all have so much more in common than we choose to recognize most of the time.

  • My favorite part of winter is snuggling up toasty warm with loved ones. I like to stay in my pajamas and be cozy all day during holidays because it takes me back to being a little kid home for winter break.

    My favorite part of winter is the earliest part of each morning–when my partner and my dogs are still asleep, and I wake up to a room no one has been moving around in for hours, in the dark and the quiet. It’s so old, and the blankets are so warmed with body heat–I just lie there and hope the alarm never goes off.

    My favorite part of any holiday is spending time with family. i have a large extended family and we always get together at least once on holidays. This year was hard, coz my (wonderful, amazing, brilliant, feminist role-model) Grammie died on Dec 14, but getting together with my family, loving each other and feeling the influence she’s had on us, made it easier to cope:)

    I also love giving present to people:D i love finding or making them something you know they’ll love, esp. if you know they wouldn’t get it for themselves. it’s definitely a way i show i care:)

    The Christmas season drives me crazy, because it’s rife with consumerism, but there are certain things I love. I love that my daughter (and her six-year-old classmates) cared enough to raise money for the local homeless shelter; I love spending time with friends and family; I love that it inspires generosity in some; and I especially love Christmas dinner, eating a wonderful meal with people that I love. :)

  • My favorite part of the holiday season is making gifts (I do beadwork) and baking cookies. I like to keep my holidays really simple and quiet (usually just me and my mom for dinner etc).
