I had the pleasure to attend the Canadian Women in Communications (CWC) Annual Awards Gala as a guest of the organization Equal Voice. The awards were held in Ottawa at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.
Entering the Gala, I really didn’t expect to be ‘star-struck.’ But, surprisingly, I was! Canadian celebrities were out in full force at this event. Here are some of the people I met:
What I learned at the awards is that the success of all these Canadian television celebrities can be attributed to one woman, named the CWC 2010 Woman of the Year, Kristen Stewart.
Stewart has been the general manager of CBC English Television since 2006. Under her leadership the CBC has substantially increased ratings and generated new revenue streams. Stewart has also contributed to the advancement of women in the industry by launching initiatives designed help employees maintain a better work-life balance. In addition, I have Kristen Stewart to thank for bringing celebrities back to Canada! In her previous position as the network’s chief creative officer she oversaw the launch of hit CBC television shows such as Dragon’s Den, Little Mosque on the Prairie, The Border, Battle of the Blades, The Hour, and many more.
Just as more women are needed in politics, more women are also needed at the helm of corporations. Kristen Stewart is an inspiration and a fantastic role model for women. I can proudly say that I have a renewed appreciation for CBC television and I hope all of you do as well.
